Saw Palmetto: Standardized Extract vs Berry Powder (the "2400 mg Equivalent" Trap)

The short answer

The big number on a saw palmetto label — "2400 mg equivalent," "900 mg full spectrum," "450 mg whole berry" — is raw-berry or equivalency weight, not the studied extract. The trials used a standardized lipidosterolic extract (~85–95% fatty acids/sterols, 320 mg/day); a ground berry powder discloses no percentage, so its active fraction is unknowable. Of the 14 products we track, only 5 disclose a standardization %. Nature's Truth's "2400 mg equivalent" is the clearest hide-the-ball. And note: standardization tells you what you're buying, not that it works.

The three facts that don't fit together

  1. The research dosed a standardized extract, not "berries." STEP and CAMUS used a lipidosterolic extract standardized to roughly 85–95% fatty acids and sterols at 320 mg/day (Bent 2006; Barry 2011) — and even that preparation was no better than placebo.
  2. The label prints a berry weight or equivalency, which isn't the extract. "2400 mg equivalent" is a fresh-fruit equivalency for a small amount of concentrate plus powder; "900 mg full spectrum" and "450 mg whole berry" are ground-fruit weight. The fatty-acid/sterol fraction is a small, variable slice of any of these — and it is not proportional to the marketed number.
  3. The standardized fraction is a real, disclosable spec. A genuine extract states its percentage (e.g. "standardized to 85% fatty acids") and its extract mg per serving. Without that on the panel, the delivered lipidosterolic content is unknowable — a bigger "equivalent" can contain less of the studied fraction than a smaller, standardized capsule.

Put together Because the studied product is a standardized extract (fact 1), but labels disclose berry or equivalency weight (fact 2), and the standardized fraction is a spec most brands skip (fact 3), the big number on the front tells you almost nothing about what you're getting. A "2400 mg equivalent" softgel can deliver less of the studied fraction than a plainly labeled 320 mg standardized extract. The marketing lets a large, impressive berry number stand in for a standardized dose it doesn't represent — and neither one is proven to help your prostate.

The last row is the only verifiable one: a stated percentage and a per-serving extract mg. A "45% fatty acids" partial blend (e.g. Havasu) discloses a fraction but buries the saw palmetto dose inside a multi-ingredient formula, so cost per studied dose still can't be pinned down. Most products that print a big berry number never disclose the fatty-acid/sterol fraction at all — so the delivered dose stays unknowable.

The honest exceptions (verifiable — but still not proven to work)

Exactly 5 of the 14 products we track disclose a standardized lipidosterolic extract with a stated percentage — the same category of preparation the trials used. That transparency is what you're actually paying for: you can verify it maps to the studied 320 mg extract. The other 9 are non-standardized berry powder or blends, so no matter how large their "equivalent mg," you cannot confirm the active fraction, and their cost per studied dose is incomputable. Just remember: verifiable is not the same as effective — even the standardized 320 mg dose was no better than placebo.

What to actually do

  • Ignore the "equivalent mg" number. It's not the studied dose. Look for an explicit standardized to X% fatty acids/sterols and a per-serving extract mg on the Supplement Facts panel.
  • Prefer a disclosed standardized extract over a bigger, cheaper berry number. A disclosed 320 mg standardized extract beats an undisclosed "2400 mg equivalent" you can't verify — see the dosage guide.
  • Watch blends. A "prostate complex" with nettle, pumpkin or beta-sitosterol may bury the saw palmetto dose — check whether the standardized SP mg is stated separately.
  • Set expectations first. Standardization decides what you can verify, not whether it works — and the best trials say it doesn't beat placebo for prostate symptoms.
