Citrulline Malate 2:1: How Much Is Actually Citrulline?

The short answer
A label reading "6,000 mg citrulline malate (2:1)" is not 6,000 mg of citrulline. Citrulline malate is citrulline bound to malic acid, so at best it's ~4.0–4.3 g of actual L-citrulline (66.7% by weight, or 72.3% by moles) — and that's the theoretical ceiling. When researchers actually lab-tested five commercial "2:1" products, they came in at 1.1:1 to 1.6:1, one delivering only ~53% citrulline. Pure L-citrulline avoids the whole problem: it's 100% citrulline.
The math, three ways — because "2:1" is ambiguous
The first problem is that the industry doesn't agree on what "2:1" even means. Read as a weight ratio it's one number; read by moles (the chemically strict way) it's another; and the one fully-characterized citrulline–malate salt is actually a 1:1 compound. Here's each, for a 6 g dose:

L-citrulline is 175.2 g/mol; malic acid is 134.1 g/mol. Even under the most generous reading, more than a quarter of "citrulline malate" is malic acid, not citrulline.
The part no one else tells you: most "2:1" products don't even hit 2:1
The theoretical numbers above are the best case. In 2018, researchers used nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to directly assay the citrulline-to-malate ratio in five commercial "2:1" citrulline malate products (Chappell 2018). What they found:
- Only one of the five products came close to the labeled 2:1 ratio; most clustered around 1.6:1.
- The product used in their own trial tested at an actual 1.11:1 ratio — delivering just 4.21 g of citrulline from an 8 g dose (52.6%), worse than even the 1:1 pharmaceutical salt, despite a 2:1 label.
- A separate peer-reviewed critical review (Gough 2021) named these unverified citrulline:malate ratios as one of several contributing factors — alongside inconsistent testing protocols and dosing strategy — behind the inconsistent performance results.
Why this matters beyond your wallet In that same 2018 study, the citrulline malate showed no performance benefit — but the product was later shown by the authors' own NMR to be under-dosed. So a headline "citrulline doesn't work" result may partly reflect a mislabeled product, not the compound. The ratio problem quietly muddies the entire evidence base.
So what should you actually do?
- Want a specific citrulline dose (e.g. the ~6 g used for blood pressure)? Buy pure L-citrulline and measure it directly — no ratio guesswork, and it's cheaper per gram of citrulline.
- Prefer citrulline malate (the form in the performance studies)? Assume a "2:1" product gives you at most ~66–72% citrulline, and likely less — so an 8 g scoop is only ~5 g citrulline, and a 6 g scoop ~4 g. Dose up accordingly.

Is the malic acid useless, then?
Not necessarily — and it's only fair to say so. Malic acid is a real intermediate in the Krebs (energy) cycle, and the two most-cited citrulline performance trials happened to use the malate form, so it's baked into that evidence base. But there is no strong evidence that the malic acid adds a benefit beyond the citrulline itself, and no head-to-head trial shows citrulline malate beating an equal dose of pure citrulline. The honest read: malate isn't a scam ingredient, but you're mostly paying for the citrulline — so buy on citrulline content.
