L-Citrulline Dosage: How Much to Take, Clinical vs Label (2026)

By Erin Rose · Updated · Methodology

Educational summary — not medical advice. Use caution with blood-pressure meds, nitrates, or PDE5 inhibitors (Viagra/Cialis); not advised in pregnancy without medical supervision.

The honest answer

3–6 g/day of pure L-citrulline for blood pressure and nitric oxide; 8 g of citrulline malate (~5 g actual citrulline) about an hour before training for performance. The catch: citrulline malate isn't all citrulline — a "6,000 mg citrulline malate" label is only ~4–4.3 g of citrulline at best. Since it's one molecule, don't overpay: the cost of a real gram of citrulline ranges $0.05–$0.31 across brands and forms.

Dose by goal

Citrulline is dosed by reason, and the form matters. Here's what the human trials used, honestly graded:

GoalStudied doseEvidence
Blood pressure / nitric oxide3–6 g/day pure L-citrulline, ≥6 wkModest but real — meta-analyses show ~−4 mmHg systolic; DBP benefit needs ≥6 g/day (Barkhidarian 2019, Yang 2019)
Exercise / power8 g citrulline malate (~5 g citrulline), ~1 h preSmall & mixed — a meta-analysis found a small benefit (SMD 0.20); one famous trial found more reps, another found none (Trexler 2019, Pérez-Guisado 2010)
Erectile / blood flow1.5 g/day pure L-citrullinePreliminary — one small single-blind pilot (n=24), less effective than PDE5 drugs (Cormio 2011)
vs L-arginine (for NO)Citrulline preferredCitrulline raises plasma arginine more than arginine itself (bypasses first-pass) (Schwedhelm 2008) — see the comparison

"Studied dose" is what trials used, not a personal recommendation. For anything cardiovascular, or if you take BP/ED medication, talk to your clinician first.

Cost & actual-citrulline calculator

Enter a product's price, the total grams in the container (look up servings × mg per serving ÷ 1000), and its type. Why the type matters: pure L-citrulline is 100% citrulline, but citrulline malate is only ~72% (2:1) or ~57% (1:1) citrulline — so picking the type corrects for the malic acid and shows the true cost per gram of actual citrulline.

How to take it

  • Know your form. Pure L-citrulline is 100% citrulline; citrulline malate is only ~57–72% at best — see the malate-ratio breakdown.
  • For performance: ~8 g citrulline malate (or ~5–6 g pure), about an hour before training.
  • For blood pressure: 3–6 g/day of pure citrulline, consistently, for at least 6 weeks — the effect builds, it isn't acute.
  • Powder is far cheaper than capsules per gram, and pure powder skips the malate-math entirely.

Frequently asked questions

How much L-citrulline should I take?

3–6 g/day of pure L-citrulline for blood pressure/NO (BP benefit strongest at ≥6 g, ≥6 weeks); 8 g citrulline malate (~5 g actual citrulline) ~1 h pre-training for performance. No RDA — start low.

L-citrulline vs citrulline malate?

Pure L-citrulline is 100% citrulline; citrulline malate is citrulline + malic acid, so only ~66–72% (2:1) or ~57% (1:1) is citrulline, at best. A "6,000 mg citrulline malate" label is ~4–4.3 g citrulline — testing suggests often less.

When should I take citrulline?

~1 h before training for performance; daily (timing flexible) for blood pressure, where it builds over weeks. With or without food. Loading isn't proven to beat simple daily/pre-workout dosing.

Is L-citrulline safe?

Very well tolerated (mild GI at most). Caution with BP meds, nitrates, and PDE5 inhibitors (additive BP drop); avoid in pregnancy without medical supervision (a 2025 preeclampsia trial found a possible signal of harm).

How much citrulline is in 6,000 mg of citrulline malate?

At best ~4–4.3 g (66.7% by weight or 72.3% by moles). But independent NMR testing found commercial "2:1" products at 1.1:1–1.6:1, one delivering only ~53% (~3.2 g). Treat the label as an optimistic ceiling.
