The "krill is better absorbed" claim rests on a real chemical difference: krill oil's EPA and DHA are bound predominantly to phospholipids, while fish oil delivers them as triglycerides or, in cheaper concentrates, ethyl esters. Whether that translates into a meaningfully better human outcome is where the evidence gets genuinely mixed, and all three trials need to be read together, not selectively.

The density math: why "better absorbed" usually doesn't pay for itself
Even where the absorption edge shows up, it has to overcome a much bigger gap: krill oil is simply less concentrated in EPA+DHA than fish oil to begin with. Concentrated fish oil products commonly deliver 300–500mg+ per gram, and ultra-concentrated triglyceride formulas can exceed 800mg/g. Ulven 2011 (n=113) is the cleanest demonstration of what this means in practice: krill oil at 543mg EPA+DHA/day produced plasma and lipid effects comparable to fish oil at 864mg/day — krill needed 37% less total omega-3 to match. That's a real, quantified efficiency edge, and the study's own authors concluded "krill oil and fish oil thus represent comparable dietary sources." The catch: retail krill oil softgels don't dose anywhere near 543mg EPA+DHA — a typical 1-2 softgel serving delivers 120-270mg. So the efficiency edge that Ulven demonstrated at a much higher dose rarely shows up at the dose people are actually buying, and the honest verdict is a premium paid for less total omega-3, not a bargain.

Two real, secondary differentiators exist, and both need honest scoping. First, astaxanthin — krill oil naturally contains this carotenoid antioxidant, but the amount is small and rarely disclosed: of the six products in our comparison, only one states a figure (1.6mg per 2-capsule serving, Viva Naturals), well under the 4-12mg doses studied in dedicated astaxanthin trials (see the astaxanthin hub for that evidence). It's a real bonus, not a reason by itself to accept lower omega-3 density. Second, the claim that krill oil causes less "fish burp" than fish oil is widely repeated in marketing but was not tested in any randomized controlled trial in this evidence base. If your priority is the lowest cost per mg of actual EPA+DHA, concentrated fish oil almost always wins on density alone.
