Short-term stress and mental fatigue trials are positive but older and industry-linked; fatigue overall is genuinely mixed; and for mood it looks weaker than sertraline but far better tolerated (graded evidence here). What rhodiola is

Rhodiola rosea — also called golden root or Arctic root — is a hardy plant from cold, high-altitude regions of Europe and Asia, used traditionally to fight fatigue and altitude stress. As a supplement it is an adaptogen: the claim is that it helps the body resist physical and mental stress. Its root is standardized to two families of active compounds: rosavins (rosavin, rosarin, rosin) and salidroside. The extract used in most of the good trials is the Swedish SHR-5 type, standardized to about 3% rosavins and 1% salidroside. Does it work? (the short version)

Honestly graded, rhodiola is a modest performer, not a miracle:

  • Endurance / VO2max — moderate, dose-dependent. A 2025 meta-analysis of 26 randomized trials (n = 668) found a small improvement in VO2max (effect size ~0.32) that got larger above 600 mg/day (2025 meta-analysis).
  • Short-term stress & mental fatigue — moderate but conflicted. Older single-site trials in stressed students and physicians were positive, but they're small and industry-linked.
  • Fatigue overall — genuinely mixed. A systematic review found benefit in only some of the trials it examined and rated the overall evidence as low-quality (Ishaque 2012).
  • Mood — weak-to-moderate. A head-to-head trial found rhodiola less effective than sertraline but with roughly half the side effects (the difference wasn't statistically significant, and the study was underpowered) (Mao 2015).

The buying problem: is it even the right species?

Here's what most rhodiola content ignores. Rosavins are nearly unique to Rhodiola rosea — they're the species fingerprint. Salidroside is not; it also occurs in the cheaper, widely substituted Rhodiola crenulata. So a product can meet a salidroside spec while being the wrong plant entirely. Independent testing bears this out: one chemical survey found about 20% of R. rosea products contained no rosavin at all and 20–40% were mislabeled or adulterated (Booker 2016), and DNA barcoding of products found a majority were not the labeled species (Xin 2015).
