The short answer

The big number on a milk thistle label — "milk thistle 1,000 mg," "3,000 mg," "4:1 extract," "full-spectrum" — is seed or blend weight, not silymarin. Silymarin is the active flavonolignan complex, and it's only computable when the label also prints a silymarin %. Independent testing found silymarin per serving varying about 2,800% (~17.4 to ~498 mg), and peer-reviewed testing found 35–125% of the declared amount. Of the 12 products we track, only 5 disclose a silymarin % — the only ones whose active dose you can verify.

The three facts that don't fit together

  1. The research doses silymarin, not seed weight. Milk thistle's studied effects trace to silymarin, a complex of flavonolignans whose main component is silibinin (silybin). The pharmacopeial convention (USP / German Commission E) is an extract standardized to roughly 70–80% silymarin, and the studied intake is expressed in silymarin milligrams (~140–800 mg/day), not seed milligrams.
  2. The label prints extract weight, which isn't silymarin. "Milk thistle 1,000 mg" is the mass of seed or extract. Silymarin is a variable fraction of that mass, and it is not proportional to the milligram claim unless a percentage is stated. So the number you see and the number that matters are decoupled — the actual active is extract mg × silymarin %, and without the percentage you can't finish the math.
  3. Measured silymarin varies ~2,800%. Independent lab testing (ConsumerLab) found silymarin per serving ranging from about 17.4 mg to 498 mg, with 2 of 6 products delivering only 40–60% of label. A "3,000 mg" bottle can contain less silymarin than a "150 mg" one that's standardized to 80%. The marketing quietly lets a large, impressive weight stand in for an active dose it doesn't represent.
