It's the smartest-sounding critique of collagen — and it's only half right. Yes, collagen is a protein and gets broken down in the gut. But hydrolyzed collagen isn't fully reduced to single amino acids: a meaningful fraction is absorbed as small di- and tri-peptides, especially ones containing hydroxyproline, and these measurably show up in the bloodstream after you drink it (Skov 2024). Researchers have even isolated a stable bioactive hydroxyproline tripeptide in human blood post-ingestion (2022). Those peptides are thought to act as signals that nudge skin fibroblasts to make more collagen — though that signaling is shown mainly in cell and animal models, not yet proven in human skin. So the mechanism objection isn't crazy — it's just outvoted by the trials: randomized studies measuring actual skin outcomes found real (if modest) improvements, most cleanly a 2023 meta-analysis of hydrolyzed-collagen trials (Pu 2023). One quality nuance: collagen is animal- or marine-derived, so heavy-metal content is worth a check.
