AKBA vs "Boswellic Acids": Why "65%" Isn't the Active in Boswellia

The short answer

The big number on a boswellia label — "1200 mg," "65% boswellic acids" — is total extract or total-acid weight, not AKBA. AKBA (acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid) is the potent 5-LOX inhibitor the trials standardized for, and it's usually a small fraction of the total acids. Analytical testing found commercial AKBA from 3.83% down to 0.03% — undetectable in some (Beghelli 2017), so a "65%" spec is decoupled from the thing that works. Of the 13 products we track, only 4 disclose an AKBA % or a branded clinical extract.

The three facts that don't fit together

  1. The research standardizes to AKBA, not "boswellic acids." AKBA is the most potent natural 5-LOX inhibitor in boswellia (Safayhi 1996), and structure-activity work shows the AKBA structure specifically — not the total boswellic-acid content — drives that inhibition (Sailer 1996). The knee-OA trials used extracts stated as an AKBA percentage or a named extract: 5-Loxin (30% AKBA), Aflapin/AprèsFlex (~20% AKBA), BOS-10.
  2. The label prints a total-acid percentage, which isn't AKBA. "65% boswellic acids" is the combined weight of several boswellic acids, most far weaker than AKBA. AKBA is typically only a small slice of that total, so a product can truthfully claim "65% boswellic acids" while containing very little AKBA. The percentage you see and the fraction that matters are decoupled.
  3. Commercial AKBA content varies about a hundredfold. Analytical testing of commercial boswellia found AKBA from 3.83% down to 0.03%, undetectable in some samples (Beghelli 2017). Without a disclosed AKBA number, the delivered active is unknowable — a bigger "65%" capsule can contain less AKBA than a smaller, AKBA-standardized one.
