The Beetroot Nitrate Label Trap: Why "1,000 mg" Isn't the Dose

The short answer
The big number on a beetroot label — "beetroot 1,000 mg," "20:1 extract," "6,000 mg equivalent" — is whole-root or blend weight, not nitrate. Nitrate is the active compound, and it's almost never printed. Independent testing found nitrate varying more than 200-fold between products (about 2.2 to 495.6 mg/serving), so the same milligram claim can deliver wildly different doses. Of the 16 products we track, only 1 discloses an actual nitrate figure.
The three facts that don't fit together
- The research doses nitrate, not beetroot. Beetroot works because it's rich in inorganic nitrate, which the body converts nitrate → nitrite → nitric oxide (Lundberg 2008). The studied dose is ~6–13 mmol nitrate/day (~372–800 mg), with a clear no-effect floor below ~6 mmol (Wylie 2013).
- The label prints root weight, which isn't nitrate. "Beetroot 1,000 mg" is the mass of dried root or extract. Nitrate is a small, variable fraction of that mass — dependent on soil, cultivar, and processing — and it is not proportional to the milligram claim. So the number you see and the number that matters are decoupled.
- Measured nitrate varies >200-fold. Independent lab testing (ConsumerLab) found beetroot products ranging from about 2.2 mg to 495.6 mg of nitrate per serving, with cost per 100 mg nitrate spanning roughly $0.30 to $23; powders were generally cheapest and no product exceeded heavy-metal limits. Put together Because the studied effect is tied to a nitrate dose (fact 1), but labels disclose root weight (fact 2), and actual nitrate swings >200-fold (fact 3), the milligram number on the front tells you almost nothing about the dose you're getting. A "bigger" beetroot can contain less nitrate than a "smaller" one. The marketing quietly lets a large, impressive weight stand in for an active dose it doesn't represent.
The "big number" tricks, decoded
Four figures routinely stand in for a nitrate dose — and none of them is one:

The last row is the near-miss: a percentage spec can be turned into a nitrate mg (extract mg × %), but most products that cite a nitrate percentage still never print the resulting per-serving milligrams — so the delivered dose stays unknowable.
The one honest exception (and why it still falls short)
Exactly 1 of the 16 products we track discloses a real nitrate number — an extract standardized to "no less than 4% nitrate," which works out to about 24 mg of nitrate per serving. That transparency is worth rewarding, because you can actually verify it. But be honest about the amount: 24 mg is only ~6% of the ~372 mg (6 mmol) minimum studied dose. So even the most transparent label here delivers a fraction of a researched intake in one serving — the disclosure is the win, not the dose.

What to actually do
- Ignore the whole-root milligram number. It's not the dose. Look for an explicit nitrate (NO3) mg on the Supplement Facts panel.
- Prefer a stated nitrate figure over a bigger, cheaper claim. A disclosed 24 mg beats an undisclosed "1,000 mg" you can't verify — then stack servings toward the ~372 mg floor.
- Consider a concentrated shot dosed to a nitrate spec (~6.4–8.4 mmol per 70 mL) if hitting a known dose matters to you.
