Healthy-adult trials used 250–630 mg/day — Marcus 2017 tested 250mg and 500mg single doses, Bellar 2015 used 600mg/day for 6 days, and Kerksick 2024's one significant result (a Stroop-test improvement) was at 630mg. The prescription dementia dose is 1200 mg/day (400mg three times daily) — roughly 2–4× a typical retail serving, tested in disease patients, not healthy adults. And because alpha-GPC is commonly sold as a 50%-standardized blend, a "600mg" label may mean only 300mg is the actual compound — work through the math below before assuming your dose matches a trial.
The dose depends on which evidence you're chasing
Alpha-GPC doesn't have one settled retail dose — and the honest reason is that the trials behind it split into two populations with very different doses. In healthy adults, the sports-performance and acute-cognition literature used 250–630 mg/day: Marcus 2017 tested single 250mg and 500mg doses (the lower dose outperformed the higher one on jump power — not a "more is better" result), Bellar 2015 used 600mg/day for 6 days in a tiny (n=13) crossover trial, and Kerksick 2024 tested single acute doses of 315mg and 630mg, with the significant Stroop-test result appearing only at 630mg (three other cognitive tests and all physical-performance measures were null at both doses). None of these trials ran longer than about a week, and none tested doses above 630mg in healthy adults.
The prescription dose is a different story entirely. Choline alfoscerate (the pharmaceutical name for alpha-GPC), used for dementia and post-stroke cognitive decline in Italy, Russia, and other countries, was tested at 1200 mg/day — 400mg three times daily — in De Jesus Moreno Moreno 2003's 261-patient Alzheimer's RCT, over 180 days. That's roughly 2–4× a typical 300–600mg retail serving, tested in a disease population, not in healthy adults chasing a focus effect. Retail copy that implies a standard capsule replicates that prescription-trial cognitive benefit is overstating what the evidence supports.
